It refers to my style and how it’s in stark contrast to what I assume is “de rigueur” on the French Riviera…aren’t I fancy enough just using that term?
What style? I really don’t have a style. I stopped reading fashion mags regularly years ago because I didn’t have the money to keep up with all the things they told me I needed to buy. Plus, I didn’t really even want to buy all (most) of that crap, but their guilt trips can be pretty effective. On me, anyway. So, maybe once or twice a year I’ll dip into a fashion mag for a little inspiration and make sure I’m not totally off track. Turns out, I’m usually totally off track. Then I might try to grab a little something here or there that appeals to me between the pages—like something orange for last spring when they said it was going to be hot. Did it end up being hot? I think I missed it… See, I can’t even get it right when I’m prepared for it! I don’t think I even wore those damn orange shoes…
So, what I do end up wearing is a combination of Target dresses and things I find at Goodwill or local shops. Now, don’t start thinking I’m some hip chick who can turn a Goodwill dud into a stylish layered hipster ensemble ala Molly Ringwald in Pretty In Pink. I already told you, I’m not stylish. I have no fashion sense. It’s really hard for me to step back and say, “That looks right and that looks wrong and now all I need is that perfect accessory.” Honestly, I think it all looks right and wrong and I always forget to add accessories. Still, most of the time I leave my house feeling fine. I tend to just stick with neutral and safe, and I’m ok with that (I have other things on my mind, for the love of G!). Plus, I live on the border of hipsterville where anything goes, especially my favorite: unwashed hair and a good leggings/t-shirt combo with an old lady cardigan over it. So comfy! So practical! I love it! Pause for my stylish friends to vomit.
Anywho, from what I hear, neutral and practical do not cut it at Cannes. Plus, I’m a filmmaker, I need to be a little bit creative, right? I can’t fall back on the Target dresses I wear to work, that’s for sure. Here’s where I get a little nutty—I’m a filmmaker, so I want to be creative and express that through what I wear, but I’m also a former (?) GIGANTIC nerd, so there’s always that little nerd inside of me whispering, “Wouldn’t it just be nice to fit in? No need to get crazy! Don’t experiment, it could all go horribly wrong!” So, there you go, that’s why I care about what I wear for this trip. It all goes back to my childhood…(tear)
Please feel free to share your thoughts on what I should buy for this trip in the comments below. Seriously, I need help with this, throw some suggestions my way!
